Danny Seraphine

 

It’s not a coincidence that every single one of the iconic group Chicago’s top-twenty songs and their 5 sequential number-one albums feature the group’s co-founder and driving force, Danny Seraphine.  Having grown up in the windy city and taking up drums at the age of 9, Danny’s studies with Bob Tilles, Chuck Flores and Papa Jo Jones prepared him to help create one of the most popular, successful and long running American groups of the 20th Century.  

 

Seraphine’s scintillating two-bar intro to “Make Me Smile” provided Chicago a high impact introduction to the ears of America, and his signature solo piece from “I’m a Man” demonstrated his chops live at Carnagie Hall for the entire world of music to hear.

 

More than a player, Danny co-wrote the Top 40 hit “Lowdown” along with many other influential album cuts throughout his tenure. With technique to spare, his take-charge style and inventive playing elevated Chicago’s powerful, big horn sound with an energy and drive that allowed them to generate major hit after hit until his departure in 1990.

 

After more than 45 years, and after being rated by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the top 100 drummers of all time, Danny Seraphine remains musically vital and engaged. Today he not only drums, but is a producer and clinician, while recording and performing with his group the California Transit Authority.
